What is SAA Certification?
SAA certification is issued under the authority of the Standards Association of Australia, commonly referred to as Australian certification. All electrical products sold in Australia must meet SAA certification requirements.
The standards body of Australia is the Standards Association of Australia. For this reason, Australian certification is widely known as SAA certification. In fact, SAA is only a standards-setting organization and does not issue product certification certificates. It was later renamed Standards Australia Limited. As an independent entity, SAA has no direct ties to the government, while federal and state governments serve as its members.
SAA has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Australian Federal Government, recognizing its leading role as a non-governmental standards organization in Australia. The memorandum also requires standards to be formulated in line with WTO rules. Accordingly, new Australian standards will not be developed if applicable international standards already exist. Australian standards are prefixed with "AS", while joint Australia-New Zealand standards use the prefix "AS/NZS". Australian and New Zealand standards are generally aligned with IEC standards, with minor national differences. The two countries implement unified standards and mutual recognition of certifications, allowing products certified in one country to be sold directly in the other.
SAA certification ensures electrical products comply with local safety regulations and is a mandatory requirement for accessing the Australian market. Thanks to the mutual recognition agreement between Australia and New Zealand, products with Australian SAA certification can also enter the New Zealand market. All electrical goods require safety certification via SAA. Currently, there are two application methods in China: conversion from a valid CB test report, or direct application without a CB report.
