In 2014, the EU issued the new Radio Equipment Directive (RED) 2014/53/EU. Implemented in June 2016 and fully enforced from 2017, it replaces the old R&TTE Directive 1999/5/EC. All radio products exported to the EU must complete CE certification under the RED directive for legal market access.

Major Changes of the New RED Directive

Abolition of the R&TTE warning symbol;

Applies only to radio equipment and no longer covers telecommunications terminal equipment (TTE);

The frequency range is adjusted from 9KHz - 3000GHz to 0 - 3000GHz with no lower limit, prompting updated ETSI harmonized standards and ECO frequency allocation regulations;

Broadcast television receivers are included in the regulatory scope;

Cover radiolocation equipment relying on radio wave positioning, such as radar;

Wired communication terminals without radio functions are exempted from RED regulation;

Updated specifications for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and short-range communication devices with revised requirements for testing reports and product design;

Radio equipment assessment shall be conducted within at least one EU member state for CE marking. CE marking is prohibited for products not sold in the EU.
