Introduction to EU NDT Personnel Certification

EN 473 is the former EU qualification standard for non‑destructive testing personnel, widely required in PED pressure equipment, EN 1090 steel structure welding, EN 15085 railway welding and other certification systems. It regulates the qualification of industrial NDT inspectors. Certificates issued under this standard are recognized across EU member states and most regions worldwide.

Since January 1, 2013, EN ISO 9712:2012 has officially replaced EN 473:2008 as the unified European NDT personnel standard. The certificate is valid for 5 years and may be renewed for another 5 years. After 10 years, recertification is mandatory. Two retake examinations are allowed during the 10‑year recertification. Level 3 personnel shall provide evidence of continuous practical competence for recertification.

NDT Qualification Levels

01 Level 1

Level 1 personnel are authorized to perform NDT operations in accordance with written instructions and under the supervision of Level 2 or Level 3 staff.
02 Level 2

Level 2 personnel are qualified to conduct and supervise NDT activities in accordance with approved testing procedures.
03 Level 3

Level 3 personnel are fully responsible for managing, guiding and verifying all qualified NDT operations.
