LVD stands for Low Voltage Directive. On March 29, 2014, the EU officially released the updated 2014/35/EU to replace the former 2006/95/EC, which has been officially enforced since April 20, 2016. The core aim of LVD is to ensure the safety of low-voltage electrical equipment. It covers devices with rated AC voltage of 50~1000V and DC voltage of 75~1500V, including household appliances, hand tools, lighting products, wires, cables and distribution equipment. The directive specifies comprehensive safety rules to prevent mechanical and electrical hazards.
Introduction to LVD Low Voltage Directive and Product Scope(2014/35/EU Low Voltage Directive)
What is LVD?
- LVD Certification Scope
- Household Appliances
- LED Lighting Products
- Switching Power Supplies
- IT Equipment
- Electrical & Electronic Products
Requirements of Low Voltage Directive
EU member states shall ensure all electrical equipment sold in the market poses no risks to human, animal and property safety. Key requirements:
- 01Designed in compliance with unified safety specifications
- 02Correct installation and regular maintenance
- 03Operated in line with design purposes
Products complying with EU harmonized standards are deemed qualified. Formulated earlier than CE marking rules, LVD was revised by 93/68/EEC to adapt to updated regulations. Manufacturers or authorized EU representatives may issue the Declaration of Conformity and affix CE marking for qualified products. Technical documents shall be kept for 10 years for official inspection after product launch.
Equipment Subject to Low Voltage Directive
The low voltage specified in the directive refers to AC 50V~1000V and DC 75V~1500V, not low miniature voltage such as 3V, 5V or 12V. Typical products:
- Household Appliances(EN60335)
- Lighting Fixtures(EN60598)
- Audio-visual Products(EN60065)
- IT Products(EN60950)
- Electrical Machinery(EN60204)
- Measuring Instruments(EN61010)
Required Certification Documents
- 01Electrical schematic diagram (main circuit, wire gauge, motor power, fuse and circuit breaker parameters marked)
- 02Control panel layout & component drawing
- 03Internal wiring diagram and terminal layout of electric cabinet
- 04Internal layout drawing of electrical box
- 05Electronic components list (name, model, manufacturer, quantity and CE certification status)
- 06English version user manual
- 07Product difference list
- 08CE certification application form
LVD Certification Application Process
The LVD certificate can be issued within one month after complete submission of product documents.
