Canadian CWB Certification

Introduction to CWB Certification

CWB (Canadian Welding Bureau) is an authorized certification body accredited by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC). Its core scope covers welding procedure qualification and welding inspection certification for steel structure manufacturers. The CWB laboratory in Mississauga is also recognized by SCC for professional testing services.

CWB certification ensures enterprise production and products comply with CSA standards. It standardizes on-site welding operations, optimizes welding procedures, improves the competency of welding personnel, stabilizes product quality and enhances market competitiveness.

Content of CWB Certification

CWB certification includes steel structure and aluminum structure systems. Steel structures adopt CSA W47.1 and CSA W59; aluminum structures adopt CSA W47.2 and CSA W59.2. The certification mainly contains three modules: welder qualification test, welding supervisor assessment, and review of WPS & WPDS.

  • 01 Document Submission

Enterprises shall submit required documents for assessment of welding supervisors, welding engineers and relevant CSA standard compliance materials.

  • 02 Welding Supervisor Qualification

At least one certified welding supervisor is required. Competencies include drawing reading, welding symbol interpretation, defect analysis, quality control, testing knowledge and equipment operation. The qualification certificate is non-transferable and valid long-term.

  • 03 Welding Engineer Qualification

Three categories are available: full-time engineer, part-time engineer and engineer-exempted type. Category 1 and 2 enterprises must assign qualified welding engineers to provide technical support and meet standard requirements.

  • 04 WPS & WPDS Approval

Enterprises shall prepare complete Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) and Welding Procedure Data Sheet (WPDS). All documents must be reviewed and stamped by CWB for official registration and validity.

  • 05 Welder Qualification Assessment

All in-house welders, welding operators and tack welders must pass official CWB qualification tests.

  • 06 On-site Audit & Inspection

CWB engineers conduct on-site tests for welders and supervisors, together with document review of WPS and WPDS. After full compliance, the factory will obtain official certificates and be allowed to use the CWB certification mark.
